This paper presents the design of an intelligent bed sensor that is part of a larger smart home monitoring system for the elderly. The sensor sub-system not only detects the mere presence of a person on the bed, it can precisely indicate the person's position on the bed. Initial test results are promising and it is envisaged that the sensor system will be extended to detect abnormalities in sleeping pattern such as sleep-wake periods, restlessness etc. The system is built around four force sensors installed at the base of the four bed posts. The paper reports the initial load test results using 25 lbs sensors on a table. Extrapolating techniques have been proposed and utilised to calculate the precise location of the load on the table.
