The formation of nanometer thick films on reactive metal surfaces in ionic liquids (ILs) has been demonstrated. These films, or interphases, have been investigated for their technologically important roles in enabling efficient, reversible Lithium battery electrodes and for application as conversion coatings on Magnesium alloys. A review of our work on this topic, including IL design and detailed surface analysis will be presented.
