© 2019 IEEE. The issue of transient over-voltage on medium voltage distribution substations due to ground faults on high voltage side of the networks has been investigated adequately in the literature for solidly (or resistively) grounded systems. However, in case of resonant grounded systems, this issue has not been sufficiently addressed previously despite the over-voltages when associated with resonant grounded systems are more excessive in case of faults. The paper, therefore, puts forward a detailed explanation of the issue and illustrates the main factors that can intensify the impact of such over-voltage stress. Simulations of a practical power system is used to illustrate the impacts of the issue on two cases; first, when the high voltage faults occur inside and second, when faults occur outside the main distribution zone substation.
