Modelling and Control of SST Based E-STATCOM with Supercapacitor to Enhance Voltage Stability of Distribution Network

The proliferation of distributed energy resources across power networks can impact voltage stability. The E-STATCOM combines reactive power support with active power transfer during faults and local power shortfalls to augment local voltage conditions. This paper presents a solid state transformer (SST) based energy storage STATCOM (E-STATCOM) with model predictive control and a supercapacitor to provide active and reactive power support for a distribution network. Simulated results show a reduction in output active power peak-peak values with active power absorption and injection, improved voltage regulation through reactive power exchange, as well as supercapacitor SoC management through a dynamic active power set-point.
