Portable and simple microfluidic devices are cheap alternative for point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of human diseases, especially in developing countries and regional and rural areas. However, on-field tests are limited by the use of bulky pumps, pressure controller and other equipment. Herein, we present a portable and pumpless microfluidic device developed by employing a hydrophilic yarn at the outlet to enable a stable flow for particle focusing in viscoelastic fluids. Well-defined and tunable flow rates can be applied by adjusting the length and/or number of yarn layers. We believe that the pumpless device will advance the development of point-of-care diagnosis.
