Preliminary theoretical material characterization for numerical modelling of composite structures

A procedure which combines a number of well established composite material and shock compression theories is applied to a representative CFRP laminate (Radarsat-2 +/-Z Panel face-sheet) for derivation of a full coarse material data set which describes the orthotropic strength, orthotropic hardening and orthotropic softening from limited material data. This data set has been applied for numerical simulation of experimental impact tests near the structural ballistic limit of the Radarsat-2 +/- Z sandwich panel in AUTODYN-3D. The results of the preliminary simulations show quantitatively-accurate agreement with experimental results, suggesting the derived material data set, and therefore the material data derivation procedure, is a useful tool for utilization in M/OD risk assessment of CFRP/Al HC SP spacecraft structures if detailed experimental material characterization is not possible.
