This paper reports on some research being conducted by the authors that involves reviewing early PhD theses from the Universities of Melbourne, Queensland and Sydney. The paper discusses some selected features of the candidates, fields of study and theses. Photographs and facsimiles from a selection of early theses illustrate some peculiarities of the time.
