Surface modification and lubrication for metal forming applications

posted on 2004-12-01, 00:00 authored by G L Kelly, Peter HodgsonPeter HodgsonTo understand the performance of surfaces in metal forming operations, it is important to consider the tool-lubricant-workpiece system. Changing a single element of the system, for example the lubricant, can have dramatic effects on wear and friction. This paper describes work dealing with aspects of surface performance in metal forming operations. An approach combining laboratory studies and plant trials is being used to investigate alternative tool coatings to reduce galling during automotive stamping, lubricant/ coating interactions in sliding wear and evaluation of lubrication during cold forging operations.
