This work enters fundamental philosophical debates concerning the relationship between art and epistemology. That research in turn aligns with scholarly concerns identified in the 2020 Conference of Australian & New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) and captured in their inaugural Ways of Seeing in Healthcare Exhibition. The exhibition undertakes to “promote different ways of knowing, and challenge presiding knowledges in healthcare that privilege certainty, science, and individualism” (Elizabeth Molloy, Conference Convener).
The work contributes to these debates by pivoting from the question of: ‘What knowledge can art produce’ to the question of ‘What can art reveal to us about knowledge production itself’. Through the use of imagery and optics, the work draws the observer’s attention not only to the imagery visible through the lens but to the nature of the lens itself as an epistemic tool. Hence the work illuminates a feature of this canonical technology that the observer seldom registers at a conscious level: that the magnifying lens must delete information at the periphery in order to magnify information at the centre. Metaphorically, the work prompts the viewer to adopt a reflexive stance toward our epistemic habits, intuitions, limitations and blind spots and to sometimes take an oblique point of view.
This work initiates a new cross disciplinary dialogue between arts and health sector research. ANZAHPE, as the peak organisation for health profession educators provides an extensive new forum in which to expose and share this developing research interest.
