From time to time, financial counsellors may see clients with impaired decision-making capacity, for example, as a result of an intellectual impairment. This session will explain what is meant by “capacity”—how it can range along a continuum and the extent to which a financial counsellor can be expected to assess capacity. We also reinforce the counselling skills needed to assist these clients in a sensitive and constructive way. Speech therapists also support clients. Learn how they can help and get tips for working with clients who are hard to understand.
Financial counsellors will shortly be assisting clients as part of the BSWAT Payment Scheme. You’ll be required to make a written assessment of their capabilility to understand the information and advice.
