Research statement

Dropbear is a collection of poetry and essay exploring themes at the interface between Aboriginal lived experience and the settler-colonial nationalism, as constituted and reaffirmed by the literature and art of the Australian cultural canon. The work takes aim at the insidious aesthetics of colonialism distracting from the inherent violence of the colony, following what Patrick Wolfe describes as the "logic of elimination" in which the settler-colonial-state seeks to reposition itself as the legitimate sovereign of stolen land. Across the broader Dropbear project I write to challenge and ironise the material, political and artistic claims of the Australian literary canon and centre an Aboriginal standpoint. The poems have been informed by a wide range of literary and research practices, including archival research on Australian children's literature conducted at the NSW State Library. This work was developed through the Wheeler Centre's Next Chapter Fellowship, under the mentorship of award-winning poet and researcher Tony Birch. It was further supported through the Neilma Sidney Literary Travel Fund, which supported travel to England for research and performance of the work. The work was influenced by the archival and docu-poetic techniques of First Nations poets such as Jeanine Leane and Natalie Harkin.
