Research statement

Background Meyrick’s, curatorial practice explores the socio-cultural systems within which design and creative practice operate in the public domain. Focus is placed on the material accumulation of information which is interrogated to offer novel, testing and engaging experiences for audiences. Knowledge produced from curating 7 exhibitions over a period of 3 years resulting in a curatorial strategy, critically investigating, and experimenting how we construct knowledge through both creative practice and public outcomes contributing to a form of public pedagogy. Contribution My research enhances the knowledge and visibility of public art and curatorial practice through innovative methods, enriching Geelong's socio-cultural landscape. I conducted material-based analysis, exhibition design, concept development, and extensive planning, including EOIs, funding applications, and forming an advisory board. This focused curatorial approach led to 7 public exhibitions involving 65 practitioners (2020-2023), fostering vibrant, dialogic relationships between creatives, exhibitions, and audiences. This work contributed significantly to advancing curatorial practice and expanding the cultural discourse in Geelong. Significance This research was enabled by 7 competitive grants, including a $4K Digital Innovation Festival grant (2020), two $10K Creative Communities grants, two Quick Response Arts grants, and a $100K development grant from the City of Greater Geelong (2021-2023). It supported over 65 artists to explore and exhibit their work through my curatorial efforts, with exhibitions featured Geelong Design Week. Recognized locally and internationally, I've presented this work to UNESCO delegates, City Councillors, and key cultural stakeholders, contributing significantly to Geelong's cultural development.
