Research statement

Background This book builds on ten years of journalism, two NTROs and Raising Girls Who Like Themselves in A World That Tells Them They’re Flawed, which I co-wrote with Kasey Edwards. Bringing Up Boys Who Like Themselves contributes to contemporary discussions and debates about parenting boys, based on research with foundations in the humanities and social sciences. Contribution ringing Up Boys addresses issues that are often overlooked in discussions and scholarship about boys, such as body image and the boys’ friendships. These issues are becoming more prominent as men become the targets of unrealistic and unachievable body shapes, and declining friendship among adolescent boys and men are coming to be seen as significant costs on mental health. The book also takes a critical look at the evidence on the potential problems of screentime and computer games, arguing that many of the claims about the dangers of screen time and computer games are based on poor evidence where causation and correlation are frequently confused/conflated. Significance Bringing Up Boys is significant as it addresses contemporary debates and discussions about boys and masculinity in the community, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement and the continuing public conversations around toxic masculinity.
