Research statement

Background Conflated is a book publication published by NETS Victoria that documents work produced for the exhibition by the same name that is touring Australia from 2022-2024. Edited by Claire Watson and Zoe Baston, the book features an essay by Sophia Cai and documents work in the exhibition including Cross's project Pair. Conflated examines, in the words of the curators. 'the ideas of inflation and deflation as a provocation that offers new possibilities for the contemporary world'. Contribution The work Pair sought to examine how ideas of intimacy and exchange could be framed through the conditions of Covid where touch became a mechanism of fear. Commissioned by Watson and Baston, this new project sought to extend existing research into how inflatable art structures can be configured to elicit a condition of intimate or inter-personal exchange. The research specifically sought to highlight how performative art practices could create the conditions by which a fear of touch during Covid might be overcome. Writer Sophia Cai in her text outlines 'how the work demonstrates how the pandemic has irreversibly altered our social cues and expectations. Significance Pair was selected for inclusion by leading curators Bastin and Watson for National Exhibitions Touring Victoria with funding from both Creative Victoria and Australia Council. Featuring the work of leading Australian artists Eugenia Lim (Sidney Myer Fellow), James Nguyen, Chistopger Langton and Steven Rhall, the show is touring to AUT Canberra, Logan Art Gallery, Horsham Art Gallery among other destinations. The text for the publication was authored by emerging arts writer Sophia Cai.
