Research statement

Background This research concentrates on communication dynamics between apprentices and supervisors on Australian construction sites. Despite the rigorous focus on technical proficiencies in such programmes, a distinct gap exists in imparting effective communication skills. Open communication plays a crucial role in fostering a safer workplace environment. The research, therefore, investigated digital role-playing to enhance the communication competencies of construction apprentices and supervisors to cultivate a stronger safety culture. Contribution The game used a participatory methodology involving stakeholders in every phase of the design to achieve realistic and relatable scenarios reflecting the lived experiences of apprentices. To promote effective learning, the story animation was rendered in a game-inspired style using motion-captured professional actors and digital humanoid characters rendered from within a game engine. Significance This study created an engaging role-playing game (RPG) with three-episodes that can be played on mobile devices and computers. The game’s compatibility with all mobile devices increased accessibility to innovative training and enabled construction apprentices to learn communication skills through interactive narratives. The game uses interactive narratives to enhance 'soft skills' training, specifically focusing on communication, an often-neglected area. By engaging players in this novel way, the game aims to foster healthier and safer workplace cultures within the industry.
