Research statement

Background Cultural institutions grapple with relevancy in the digital age and the need to attract diverse audiences and existing research in Architectural Design falls short in optimally engaging users. Memory Lane is an intervention funded by Creative Victoria as part of a larger Spatially Intelligent Arts Centre project that explores how innovative technology can foster interactive engagement, and user-specific content activation to enhance the overall experience of visitors. Memory Lane is grounded in spatially intelligent design, draws on the arts centre as a 'living organism' concept and addresses memory as part of human-centred design in cultural spaces. Contribution The project uses information about the Geelong Arts Centre and innovatively addresses the challenge of relevancy and audience diversity. It utilises current knowledge in a novel way, using Unreal Engine 5 and Lidar technology to create an interactive arts centre memory. It thereby extends human-building interactions and creates a personalised user experience. This work's novelty lies in its blend of technology and memory, instigating personal and shared experiences. Its unique contribution resides in challenging the conventions of traditional cultural spaces, integrating cross-disciplinary knowledge, and fostering a sense of place and identity. Significance The project was funded by a 2021/2022 Creative Victoria grant and co-designed with staff from the Geelong Arts Centre through a series of workshops. Memory Lane was part of an peer-review selected showcase at the ‘A Spatially Intelligent Ats Centre’ interactive panel presentation at Geelong Design Week 2022, publicly presented at Costa Hall to visitors as part of a Geelong Arts Centre performance on 12.11.2022 and presented to a UNESCO City of Design panel at the Geelong Arts Centre on 29.03.2023.
