Research statement
Background
Sports commentary, originating in the early 20th century, has evolved from basic event descriptions to storytelling and audience engagement across radio, television, and digital platforms. Sports commentary requires versatile commentators, skilled in sports knowledge, adaptability, and technology usage for real-time analysis. As the sports broadcasting industry continues to grow there is a shift towards interactivity and inclusivity with a view to enriching fan experiences. However, there is a lack of systematic training for commentators and particularly play-by-play commentary remains a barrier hindering diversity and perpetuating an outdated paradigm.
Contribution
The research explored how technology can place participants in the high-stakes live broadcast studio environment aiming to develop quick thinking skills, effective communication, and linguistic agility. Play-by-Play is an immersive sports commentary simulator that captured the intricacy and dynamism of sports commentary by providing access to multiple sports scenarios across various difficulty levels through a gamified platform. Participants, broadcasting from a soundproof booth using screen-based information and a microphone, share their commentary with an audience through a large-scale screen, followed by an online post-experience review.
Significance
Play-by-Play, with its potential impact on sports broadcasting, education, and digital media. This initiative highlights the importance of innovative training methods for aspiring sports commentators. The system informs future interactive platforms and broadcasting techniques while facilitating a pathway for underrepresented groups into sports commentary. Play-By-Play was selected for Geelong Design Week 2022 and featured on International Women’s Day 2023, offering a unique approach to engaging and educating sports enthusiasts and aspiring commentators.
