Background
This research-based design generated a masterplan for the Town of Xikou in Ningbo - China, specifically the north block and surrounding area of Wulin High School, including urban design and architectural designs. The masterplan proposed new densities and public spaces to extend the current development. The design process integrated parametric design to support a computational generative process for the architecture.
Contribution
The parametric explorations contributed to generate new urban spaces that respond to Chinese expected urban qualities (for instance, south facing buildings, courtyards, privacy), but implementing innovative concepts and hybrid blocks. By employing these digital tools, the research team combined traditional knowledge to contemporary design methods that created urban forms with more qualities.
Significance
Urban design in China is still a top-down government led process creating more challenges to designers who need to have a comprehensive understanding of people's life. By integrating parametric approaches, a more responsive, connected and qualified design emerges. This research by design approach was funded by the Ningbo Natural Resources and Planning Bureau: 'Spatial Form Research on the North Block and Surrounding Area of Wulin High School, Xikou Town'
