Research statement

Background Design and pedagogical workshops often in the form of ‘summer schools’ are outside of the institution and allow for experimentation that can be limited in the professional office and in teaching studio. ‘Radical pedagogy’ has been associated with the experimental projects in the 1960s and 1970s that questioned and shook the foundation of architecture. ‘Summer schools’ are spaces of encounter and exchange; and those that are not located in Eurocentric centres become open to alternative positions and possibilities. Contribution The installation occupies one half of a large space and comprises three components: a large ‘table’ on which are assembled fragments of encounters, exchange, experimentation; two shelves displaying 3-d printed models of the site and the monastery; and a linear narrative suspended at the long end. My invited participation two themes: The Handicapped House and The House in the Age of Transition, with contribution to the 2023 pavilion – i) creative text of the experience of the summer school; visual documentation of the design experimentation; documentation of the collaborative workshops; documentation of transnational exchange. Significance “Stories of the Summer School of Architecture in the St. Joakim Osogovski Monastery 1992-2017” is the title for the national pavilion of the Republic of Macedonia, participating in the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. The Venice Architecture Biennale is the architectural community’s most prestigious international forum. This work contributes to contemporary research on design experimentation and radical pedagogy, both challenging and extending a study by the theorist, Beatriz Colomina (2016) which explored the most prominent figures and schools.
