Background
This project stems from the provocation, how might we brand AI? addressed through design activism, aiming to shift the position of popular belief systems through the execution of design solutions.
Using this methodology, I explored the idea of artificial intelligence (AI) and its place in the creative process and what is considered AI in contemporary design.
Contribution
I investigated the research question of How does the use of primitive AI challenge the notion that creativity in design is under threat? and identified a gap in the way design activism challenges the use of contemporary design tools and the classification of such. I sought to amend this gap by examining a familiar digital software tool, Adobe Illustrator (Ai) as a form of AI. Through applying basic digital manipulation tools to the acronym ‘Ai’, I produced a poster design that documents the use of primitive digital manipulation within Ai to visually tell the story of the long use of artificial intelligence in design.
Significance
The unique approach I have to producing creative work through subtle nods to design activism and visual storytelling speaks to the significance of this project by being competitively selected to present my work at the 27th BDAK International Invitation Exhibition held in Seoul, Korea in June 2023.
This project continues to extend my research in design activism and its role in investigating contemporary social issues.
