Research statement

Black and White was a curated group exhibition of international artists working with monochrome in ways that challenge abstraction. Pound's work puts to the test figure ground relationships, and figurative and non-representative forms in a rebus. Pound sets out to test the limits of painting to hold and express figurative and abstract conundrums. In so doing, he looks to align two supposedly contradictory or competing giants of New Zealand modernism: Colin McCahon and Gordon Walters, with Milan Mrkusich in mind. Pound's work is included in this exhibition alongside modernist masters of the canon, and contemporary figures, who test the seemingly settled field of abstraction and monochrome painting. Leading figures in the field from across the globe included here are: John Nixon, Billy Apple, Colin McCahon,
