Research statement

Title: Broken (Positioning Four Lines) This project would present a body of non-objective artwork produced between 1987-2019 in the form of an Installation. The work has been an ongoing series of experiments produced alongside other areas of artistic practice, including Installation, video and photographic projects. The project was initiated by a series of drawings depicting numerous reconfigured “stretcher arms” for a canvas stretcher, essentially lengths of timber. The drawings instigated an investigation, in which four lines were constructed/created drawn, inscribed, taped and cut, through/with various materials, including paint, timber, paper and light. The work has taken on many configurations over the years, but has always been identifiable by its presentation of four lines of equal length, centrally positioned radiating out. The arrangement of these four lines have often taken the appearance of a broken cross, but no symbolic meaning was intended. At times the arrangement appeared emblematic, yet this cannot possible since the positioning of each line was always slightly different. The mathematical reading of these visually articulated lines might resemble that of a compass, in which the angle of each lines position might be measured in degree, for an imagined comprehension of bearings, or location, but the lines never actually meet or intersect. Over the years the project has always sought to investigate how this specific and curated accumulation of line might be extended, through space and medium, ie. staged in different spaces and constructed from various materials. In a sense these four lines are like actors or dancers, all in dedicated uniforms, all allocated a direction in space. In this proposal it is envisaged that many of the works for this ongoing project, produced over such a long period, might come together as one unified accumulative installation.
