Research statement
Background
This curated session was part of the 5th Cineaste International Film Festival of India (CIFFI), held under the theme Cinema for Inclusion. As curator, I selected four films that document lived experiences of Dalit and Adivasi communities through fiction and documentary forms. The selection represents an intersection of cinematic craft and marginalised perspectives, foregrounding the creative and political expressions of award winning filmmakers such as Biju Toppo, Meghnath, Somnath Waghmare, Devashish Makhija and John Sreedar. The screening was followed by a roundtable bringing together academics, filmmakers, and journalists.
Contribution
The curated films were chosen to reflect a range of regional, indigenous and caste-based realities. Cycle offers a reflection on systemic injustice through the lens of tribal life. Naachi Se Baachi presents the intellectual and political legacy of Dr Ram Dayal Munda. Chaityabhumi focuses on the cultural meaning of Ambedkar’s memorial site. Chandrudu weaves everyday exclusion into a personal narrative. The roundtable expanded this engagement through a discussion with experts from Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and independent media, enabling further scholarly dialogue and public engagement.
Significance
The event situates screen practice as a means to present historically excluded narratives. The curation was aligned with CIFFI’s objective of promoting inclusive cinema and generated discussion around representation, authorship, and caste in contemporary Indian film. The inclusion of practitioners and scholars in the post-screening dialogue created a collaborative environment for reflection and inquiry. As a research activity, the event contributed to my ongoing commitment to centring marginalised voices through curatorial practice, public-facing scholarship, and community-informed programming.
