Research statement
Background
The UN called for an international design challenge that showcased various communication design strategies around key information concerning Covid. In an era of ‘communicative abundance’ or ‘media decadence’ and dispersed media sources, the environment lends itself to the proliferation of misinformation (Kean 2013). The researcher’s challenge was to curate an exhibition that cohered around sound communication strategies, whilst fostering a vibrant and dialogic relationship between the design and communication approaches that were inclusive of diverse global perspectives.
Contribution
Designed For Action: a Collective Response to Covid-19 presents a significant body of work from over 50 countries that engages this broad cultural debate around respect for diversity, as well as unification through communication. This exhibition explores how the collective actions of communication designers around the world use design to communicate messages that can be accurate and unifying whilst diverse in their approach.
The researcher not only performed these intentions through selection of works, but also through viewing platforms, where a digital exhibition coincided with a physical installation in Geelong.
Significance
Initiated by the UN, the exhibition centres on fostering constructive change by sharing outputs of visibly engaging and informative design artefacts. This exhibition has gained global exposure through the UN, International Council of Design (ICoD) and Deakin University’s international networks. The show was exhibited in two separate galleries in highly visible locations in Geelong. The exhibition has been invited to submit for Design Canberra, a leading event on the Australian Design calendar, with further international exposure and impact. The show’s curator has been interviewed by True South films, about the exhibition. The exhibition was supported by a contribution from the City of Greater Geelong Creative Community fund.
