Background
With the ubiquity of images, type and brands circulating at unprecedented speeds we are bombarded with visual stimuli which can have a desensitising effect. To counter this, the exhibition produces new dialogues, conversations that that are brave, reflexive and critical, to enable design that is impactful and long-lasting. How can new visual narratives generate novel, relevant discourses and be meaningful to audiences from diverse backgrounds, cultures and locations? This exhibition gives place-based designers a unique voice, engaging critical dialogues.
Contribution
The exhibition contributes new work that positions the visual narrative in a bespoke new architectural space for new audiences. The dialogue explores visual narratives that are multi-sequential yet thematically concurrent resulting in graphics, typography, colour, sound, video and 3D visualisation within the innovative site-specific exhibition design. Physical navigation of the site (a three-story-high building) presented for the viewer the possibility of reinterpretation of artefacts. The arrangement of works encouraged walkways, viewpoints, and artefacts for physical and virtual engagement meaning that viewers followed their own initiative to enact their own reorientations towards the artefacts and experiences with the visual narratives.
Significance
This exhibition was the recipient of a 10k commission from the Geelong Performing Arts Centre. The exhibition was commissioned for the launch of the new Hassell designed art centre to coincide with the opening celebrations. The exhibition was significant for the Geelong region in that the critical dialogues of the work and the visual narratives which stemmed from them offered audiences a new vision of the region, not previously seen or made visible. The show received over 5000 visitors over 3 weeks, from all levels of community, corporate and government.
