Background
Geelong is a new UNESCO City of Design, with its global identity still evolving. To strengthen its place brand equity, a series of creative works was commissioned to explore its emerging identity. Meyrick & Kay investigated Geelong's visual narrative through a collaborative process, focusing on how design, graphics, and typography shape its global image. Using a Research Through Design methodology, they highlighted the region's history of notable designs and inventions. This work critically reflects on the impact of creative industries in Geelong, shaping its regional identity and influencing contemporary Australian culture.
Contribution
The creative output resulted in five A0-sized exhibition panels displayed at the 2023 UNESCO Geelong Design Week in Wurriki Nyal (council chambers). These panels contributed to strengthening Geelong's place brand identity as a UNESCO City of Design. Addressing the research question on how visual narrative, graphics, and typography can enhance a global identity, the work established a new benchmark for the city. It highlighted the importance of recognizing near-term heritage and history as foundational elements of Geelong's brand. For audiences, the exhibition exemplified meaningful design practice, fostering community, economic growth, and shared connections
Significance
This qualitative exploration of Geelong's recognized design and invention history, commissioned for the 2023 Geelong Design Week, drew over 10,000 visitors in 11 days. The work is now integral to Geelong's "City of Design" visual narrative and place brand toolkit, used by councilors at international events, including in Braga, Portugal, in May 2024. It furthered Meyrick’s research into strong place branding and led to their role as a UNESCO City of Design Ambassador for Geelong. By highlighting Geelong's design history through visual narrative, the series helps to shape and enhance the city’s global identity, ensuring its place brand remains dynamic.
