engResearch statement
This research investigated the way in which movement enacts cognition within socially engaged art. Moving out of studios, into new local spaces, and toward others, participants interacted and explored hand-based creative practice. Local emerging and established artists collaborated with the researcher, moving into and out of temporary communities where they met each other and worked together to build the artworks. Artists were ‘part of something’ which built their belief in the project as ‘with them’, rather than ‘for them’ and fostered relationships, and a spirit of generosity where everyone was benefitting; rather than a top down or a ‘expert/learner’ feeling. Participants selected and installed works, engaged audiences and enacted an embodied knowledge exchange across generations. The research produced participatory field trips, workshops and exhibitions: In our Backyard (Geelong Courthouse, June 2019) and Backyard Pop-Up (Geelong Art Centre, Reflex Symposium, Nov 2019) from artefacts made by participants including: working with found objects, collecting and curating, fibre arts, visual arts, installation, ceramics, performance and paper cutting. Research has been invited to present findings by Asian Humanities Conference (Tokyo, 26/6/2020, delayed due to COVID-19) and Australasian Drama and Performance Studies Association (Sydney, 4/12/2020). Impact and significance indicators include: •tFunded by Geelong City Council •tPartnership with Courthouse Youth ArtsPublication classification
