Research statement
Building Ampara was a collaboration led by Deakin University with Moratuwa University and the International Islamic University of Malaysia in partnership with NGO organisation, Aspiration Education Foundation. Intercultural Dialogue Through design is an international design workshop, with transcultural social agenda, it's pedagogical structure is a global mobility study tour format with 4x pre travel academic seminars, 3 week of intensive in country immersive cross cultural experience and a three-week post study tour reflection. The project adopted a holistic sustainable design methodology with co-design participatory engagement with the community stakeholders in the development of the building program and in identifying the needs and issues of the community based organisation. The project responded directly to the community need for a community facility that would kick start and facilitate economic empowerment for the most under-priviledged and under represented members of the community, being the women and children. The building was realised through funds raised in partnership and led by Aspirations Education Foundation who oversaw the building realisation. The low cost budget ($6K) saw the first stage of the overall design concept realised which comprised of a single story concrete building with an office, a computer space and a common social area which serves the community today as "Dirliya Mansala community centre" which means "empowerment centre". The design research conducted in the pre workshop phases which covered low cost construction materials, adaptation of vernacular building techniques , exploring the use of bamboo as a building material and effective methods for economic empowerment informed the design concepts and outcomes. Stakeholder perception of both community and non-community have been ongoing with traditional research publications. Public exhibition were held in Colombo Exhibition Centre and at Deakin University.
