Research statement
Background
At the invitation of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Creative Victoria and the Victorian Design Trade Missions, the International Indigenous Design Charter was included as a part of a select delegation to exhibit at the Melbourne Pavilion (Design Inspire: Shared Values exhibition) as part of Hong Kong Business of Design Week. The Charter was exhibited in a novel form specific to this event, in order to provoke a different kind of discussion enabled by a forum that gathered together practitioners from diverse cultural backgrounds and design approaches.
Contribution
The formal reconfiguration of the charter (one artefact was a movie) in combination with talks and panel discussions lead by the researcher, worked to generate conversation that looked specifically at an international examination of working with Indigenous knowledges, exposing international bias and challenges that have been used to inform the International Charter. This event presented an international perspective from a diverse range of nationalities and challenged some of the Charter document’s assumptions. The Charter is a live document that is ever-evolving and relies on this type of ongoing and current work in order to maintain relevancy.
Significance
The event is an important Victorian initiative demonstrating Victoria's design strengths in an international context. The exhibition was curated by Ewan McEoin (NGV) and Phip Murray. This engagement led to an international dissemination of the findings of the Indigenous Charter documents and the development of partnerships examining the impact of the research.
