Research statement

Research Background Gender imbalance in the Australian screen industry has been an ongoing concern for several decades with the issue resurfacing most recently in Screen Australia’s 2015 Gender Matters report. The report highlighted the dismal participation rate for women in the domestic screen industry in both creative roles and technical roles across feature dramas and documentaries. Women’s industrial marginality, whether structurally enforced or chosen as a mode of resistance and possibility (bell hooks, 1989), raises questions for how contemporary Australian women filmmakers produce work both within the system and independently – the latter being a historically rich mode of women’s creative expression. Research Contribution As festival director of the Melbourne Women in Film Festival, I led the shaping of a programme of publicly-presented screenings, panels and a forum focused on the theme of ‘independence’ that contributes to contemporary discourses of feminist screen practice. From working outside established industrial systems, to experimental filmmaking processes and aesthetic sensibilities found within the work, the programme emphasised the complexity of women’s independence in and on screen. This included my curatorial involvement in bringing together key national industry and academic forum panelists who examined these important issues. Significance The festival was funded by Film Victoria and City of Melbourne and located at premier screen and cultural venues including the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and Hoyts Cinemas, indicating the importance of the festival in showcasing Australian women’s filmmaking. The forum conversation, co-presented with Monash University, was transcribed and published in peer-reviewed creative industries journal Fusion.
