Research statement
Research Background
The 2020 festival programme intervened in contemporary discourses of intersectional feminism and women’s screen storytelling through the curation of creative works from marginalised and diverse groups of women practitioners. While gender imbalance within the Australian screen industry has been identified through Screen Australia’s 2015 ‘Gender Matters’ report, communities of further marginalised women practitioners have not been made as visible. The festival’s programme was a platform for these filmmakers and their work to reveal and discuss the diversity of women whose lived experiences remain outside dominant reflections of Australian and Pacific cultures.
Research Contribution
As the festival’s director, I led the artistic direction and curation of 18 publicly-presented screenings, panels and workshops thematically titled ‘Stories in Colour’, aimed at providing a platform for marginalised women practitioners to share their work. This programme contained feature and short films from across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Moana Oceania showcasing the diverse experiences and stories of these filmmakers told through their practice. This included my collaboration with Dr Romaine Moreton to curate a First Nations and Pasifika filmmakers’ panel on sovereign storytelling held in dialogue with my programming of the opening night Pasifika film, Vai (2019). Other panels and screenings examined women’s perspectives on global citizenship, migration, diasporic storytelling, and inclusive representation within the broader screen industries.
Research Significance
Funded by Film Victoria and City of Melbourne and located at premier screen and cultural venues including The Capitol in partnership with Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and Palace Kino Cinemas, indicates the importance of the festival in showcasing women’s filmmaking. The festival featured in national media including Fairfax syndicated newspapers and Triple J radio.
