Research statement

Background Identity-based film festivals can be understood as sites of ‘assembly’ (Butler, 2015; Crooke, 2018; Alturnbulak, 2021), facilitating acts of political visibility by virtue of their public programming, curatorial strategies and the gathering of communities and audiences. As non-traditional research, the Melbourne Women in Film Festival 2024 used the film festival format to examine how public gathering in the festival space can embody collective understanding, learning and resistance related to urgent contemporary environmental, social and cultural issues that are currently impacting women and gender diverse people. Contribution As Festival Director, I developed and led an original, public program of 15 events, which connected critical discourses on climate and sustainability, First Nations’ strength and resilience, workplace cultures for women creatives, and the fight for trans rights. I researched and selected feature and short films, and developed panels, workshops, and Q&As. With an Australian and international audience of 1293 attending in physical and virtual festival spaces, the links made through the program illustrated how our collective histories impact our present, and reinforced festivals as sites to view, educate and share in the current challenges facing our world. Significance MWFF 2024 was funded by the state’s industry body, VicScreen ($10K), and the City of Melbourne’s 2-year Arts and Creative Investment Partnership program ($30K/year) determined through peer-review processes. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is the festival’s presenting partner, acknowledging the MWFF’s standing within Victoria’s film festival ecology. The festival attracted national media attention including a featured interview with me on Evenings with David Astle broadcast on ABC Melbourne, Regional Victoria and Darwin among others.
