Research statement
Background
The image in photography is no longer the sole identifier of ‘what is a photograph’ (Steryl, 2009). This research engages with the photograph as sculptural form (after Rossin, Wolfson and others) as well as curatorial practice – the relationships between architecture, light, and artefacts – in order to contribute to an expanded understanding of what a photograph is. The researcher includes audience participation and curatorial ‘performance’ as a way to explore ways in which the photographic artefact is ‘composed of’ paratextual elements. In this way the researcher is also engaging the question: when is a work ‘finished’?
Contribution
Motion Signalling is a solo exhibition that includes 15 works in total which, over the course of 4 days, are continually arranged and rearranged in the space by the researcher. During this performative act of curation, of ongoing movement and fluidity in the space, the researcher engages the audience in a conversation around the decision making process. The researcher includes others to contribute to the composition of the space, the meaning-making through relation-making between form, light, architecture, materialities. Through co-creation we begin to understand a photograph to be ‘in-relation’ and therefore never ‘complete’.
Significance
This research expands the scope of the photographic artefact and what it is ‘composed of’ and ‘composed by’. In a solo exhibition at Articulate gallery this is a nationally competitive callout gallery of leading artists and arts workers. Curatorial concerns in this work instigated the relationship with ARTBOX who has partnered with Deakin in a arc seed linkage project of which the research is Chief Investigator.
