Notes

Psycho-geography model of Geelong incorparates elements of physical making, architectural models, perspex inscriptions, mapping and text within the format of the creative workshop to pursue 'vacancy' in the city.

Research statement

Research Aims This large scale model of Geelong experiments with the methods of counter-representation. Its concept refers to architectural-urban experimentations: The Situationists ‘drift’ maps as instruments for connecting otherwise disparate or repressed topographies as shown in his “Guide Psychogeographique de Paris”(1957). Research Innovation The model engages with decolonizing methodology, with reference to the pictorial mapping artwork of the artist Gordon Bennett (Terra Nullius). These are ‘psycho geographic-historiographic’ intensities that the counter representational concept of a model of Geelong explores. The model experiments with industrial manufacturing as integral to the creative process. Its 3-dimensionality (space-architecture) interfaces with 2-dimensionality (drawing-text-representation). Sill height repetitive blue polystyrene sections alter the space. But this affective- immersive environment is obstructed by ‘rational’ or ‘historical’ insertions. Research Significance and Esteem Funded by the special CoGG initiative – Arts Industry Commission for projects to collaborate with – urbanism, heritage, health, or community. The model responds to urban strategy and vision. Coherence The model builds on the series of works of the VacantGeelong project exploring industrial vacancy. These works extend the measurable and evidential vacant sites of industry to defining ‘vacancy’, aiming to document the non-measurable vacancy. This current work extends ‘vacancy’: Its installation in the brutalist concrete and steel frame/glazed roof architectural interior of the CentrePoint arcade, weaves references to mapping, language, Corio Bay, Barwon River, and industrial vacancy, mixing scales, histories and temporalities.
