Extent

Through the intertwining stories and fates of its five principal characters the opera uses the theme of surveillance and mutual spectatorship as experienced in communist East Berlin as an allegory for the manner in which contemporary communication technologies mediate and control our lives in the present day. This event plays in the round with the audience part of the event. The exhibition is displayed around the audience as large canvas prints and digital virtual scenes projected in large format as well as on computers placed in the space. This enables the public to experience the prototype by giving them the opportunity to use the interface on computer monitors and to be immersed in the performance as the principle performers act out scenes from the opera. A catalogue of the opera was also produced
