Background
The photographic image and its indexicality to ‘the real’ or to ‘truth’ is a contentious issue in the context of the digital condition. Now the metadata, typically unavailable or not discernible by the image taker, holds more information and ‘knowledge’ about the image than the photographer. Thinkers like Stalder, Golding, Rubenstein and Steryl explore this phenomena in theory and practice. With previous investigations the researcher contributed to this field of enquiry by re-engaging somatically with the photographic rule of reciprocity ie finding formal means by which to enact and embody the rule – and by extension an intimate knowledge of the artefact pr
Contribution
Spin into Being is a solo exhibition that includes 3 new works: Spin into Being, Light Spin and To Be a Camera. The 3 works use different formal and performative tools as a way to engage the audiences’ own body in the process of the production of the photographic image. The works allow the audience to engage in the intimacy of the rule of reciprocity, which is typically completely hidden from view in digital photography through the algorithmic, automated mechanisms of image production.
Significance
In what may seem a highly mechanistic process, and a process that may even be irrelevant to the production of images, this research goes some way toward engaging questions around the aspects of the process of producing photographic images that are not measurable, that rely on intuition, that access the mystical force of light on image production. This exhibition is a result of a competitive open call, a gallery that exhibits nationally based artists. A double blind refereed peer review abstract accepted at the ‘International Conference Of Photography And Theory 2022 Expanded Visualities: Photography & Emerging Technologies’ at IAPT.
