Invited speaker as part of the 'Indigenous Architecture + Design Forum'
Research statement
Background
Acknowledging the poor past practices of working with Indigenous Knowledges, and building on Kennedy’s doctoral research (2015) ‘Designing with Indigenous Knowledge Protocols for Respectful and Authentic Cross-cultural Representation in Communication Design Practice’, Kennedy, Kelly and Indigenous design academics/practitioners, Prof Brian Martin (Muruwari, Bundjalung, Gamillaraay) and Jefa Greenaway (Wailwan, Gamillaraay) further pursued how designers can ethically and respectfully engage with Indigenous Knowledges in communication design practice.
Contribution
The Australian Indigenous Design Charter was created to guide best practices by offering the structural framework to ensure respectful, ethical representation of Indigenous culture in design. This is the first document of its kind to offer a system of accountability for commercial design practice framed by engagement rather than design outcomes. The document highlights the way to achieve a positive, self-determined representation of Indigenous cultures in the Australian national identity. The 10 steps of best practice protocols in the document continue to be tested and examined against real world contemporary design case study examples.
Significance
This high impact research has been well received by the Australian design industry peak body, being endorsed and promoted by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). The Australian Indigenous Design Charter has been adopted and is used as best practice protocols by designers, their clients and Government representatives across Australia. The Australian Indigenous Design Charter was launched at the Koorie Heritage Trust in 2016 and was winner of Good Design Australia Award 2018 – Indigenous Designer Award. Numerous presentations, workshops, and research outputs have been mobilized by this work, instigating a commitment from the field to the development of the broader issues and concerns that this charter addresses.
