'Town Hall' is a commissioned series of artworks made to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Town Hall. The works have been commissioned by the City of Melbourne for they commemorative exhibition, and acquired for the Council collection by the City Gallery curator, Eddie Butler Bowden. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Stephens. This commission comprises several large collection based artworks. These include: two framed collection based artworks regarding the Melbourne Town Hall, one framed work of a collection of Australian Town Halls, and a vitrine full of postcards of Town Halls from around the world. Pound has collected hundreds of picture postcards of the Melbourne town hall from three street views, with each card getting closer to the town hall.
Pound employs found and collected postcards in a historical survey of the town hall, the picture postcard and the street view, rethinking Google earth as a collection constraint, in light of historical and conceptual art photographic street panoramas from Muybridge to Ruscha. Pound positions the collection as a medium, asking us to re-examine and rethink objects that had become set in their ways. Positioning the collection as a medium this Non traditional research generates new concepts, methodologies, inventions and understandings that have implications for collection and curation practices as well for creative arts installation and display practices.Publication classification
