Research statement
Background
This research project represents my contribution as a designer/artist to the Venetian Blind project 2021. This exhibition consisted of design work extending on the initial Venetian blind brief project at the European Cultural Centre (collateral exhibition at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019). The original brief involved creating the visual collateral to tie together disparate components into one single design. This brief required a visual design solution connecting the first exhibition with the second provocation and creating a communication strategy to inform attendees on how to engage with the exhibition space.
Contribution
This work highlights the impact of design in achieving unity and synergy in a complex exhibition design. The design established a structural system for contributing artists using eight panels as communication devices, building on the design from 2019. In addition, the design contribution extended into the promotional collateral, catalogue, new content and (due to Covid-19) movement around the space. Research into the history of typography was embedded in the design as a linking story through the panels. This was continued in the 2021 exhibition, expanding on the original concept.
Significance
The work continues the research and investigation begun in Venice and now folded back into the local community of practitioners. It was a tricky project that required a strong design sense to activate. Without the design contribution the deadlines and challenges of the different spaces would not have been met.
