Research statement
There’s an established and rapidly growing field of practice-led and traditional academic research into vernacular photography. This territory is both historical and theoretical. Pound interrogates the role of vernacular photography through collection-based works that unpack the categorization of the world into sets of photographic subjects. Pound is an internationally recognised leader in the field of vernacular photography studies. His work was most recently addressed by Oxford University Professor Geoffrey Batchen: and will feature in an upcoming book by that scholar. Session 1, Why Vernacular Photography: The Limits and Possibilities of a Field. Featuring presentations by session chair Brian Wallis (The Walther Collection), Ariella Azoulay (Brown University), Geoffrey Batchen (Victoria University of Wellington), Clément Chéroux (SFMoMA), Patricia Hayes (University of Western Cape). Imagining Everyday Life: Engagements with Vernacular Photography was presented by The Walther Collection, Columbia University's Center for the Study of Social Difference, and Barnard's Center for Research on Women, on October 19-20, 2018 at Columbia's Lenfest Center for the Arts.
