Research statement

Background Questions regarding representation have continually plagued most fields of artistic practice. My current studio-based research aims to ask more questions and continue discussions regarding ‘representation,’ through the process of staging a dialogue between the figurative and non-figurative and between the photographic, painting and the sculptural. Research into these questions around ‘representation’ has evolved in my research through a long-time investigation into artwork from the early twentieth Century, specifically art movements such as Constructivism, Suprematism, Futurism and Dada, including artists such as Hannah Hoch and Alexander Rodchenko. Contribution My previous research examined the formal properties of both Sound art and non-objective painting. While on this occasion the only sound was the hum of the lightbox, another type of time-based scenario. This project/exhibition builds on existing research and previous collaborative work, in which the medium of photography is scrutinized. Much has been written regarding Photography as indexical and meaning in a photograph as fluid. Jacque Derrida writes about photography and the trace. The spectral aspects of Photography also highlight its ambiguity as a medium. Significance Predominantly the ethos of Five Walls gallery is that of maintaining the presence of non-objective art and work relating to Abstract art, therefore prompting new ways of thinking about Abstraction, developing within the field.
