Background
This is the second instalment of a collaborative project, in which the work was reinstalled site-specifically at the Third Space Gallery+Digital show, an ARI in Geelong. Box Hill 2 is a collaborative project by Sean Loughrey and Raafat Ishak where Abstraction is held accountable to representational devices, namely photographic representation in a dialogue with a black box. The artists have been working on provocations relating to the figurative and non-figurative for over 20 years. This show brings the work to an independent site with an audience not familiar with site-specific art projects.
Contribution
The contribution this exhibition makes is in bringing the artists conversations to new audiences and a unique architectural environment, both internally and externally. This challenged the artists to work with modes of Abstraction in a way that dealt with multiple constraints. Thus also re-conceptualises abstraction as an art-form outside of its traditional gallery context. The Site-specific mode of working allowed for architectural constraints to be considered.
Both artists have worked collaboratively since 1997 on a project titled Fan Flag. Fan Flag was instigated by a shared interest in the radicalism of non-objective art making.
Significance
This project is supported by the City of Greater Geelong through its 'Creative Communities Grant Program. This project was curated into the program of Third Space digital. The first iteration of which was presented at Five Walls gallery, Melbourne. Ishak's work then travelled to the Islamic Museum in Melbourne.
Seen as a "site-specific" project, the installation of the work took into consideration architectural attributes relating to the building, especially the shopfront aspects such as the arched windows, in which the general public walking past engaged with the work. (See photos) In this sense the works significance operated within a public art sphere.
