Research statement

Background Deakin University’s Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED) undertook the COVID-19 Pandemic Research Study (Monitoring the mental health and wellbeing of families across the COVID-19 Pandemic) to investigate the impact on family’s mental health during the 2020 lockdown and required investigation to increase connection with their participations. Contribution I developed a strategy to further engage the families by inviting participants to submit their children’s artwork, created during the lockdown, as a method of positive encouragement to continue the study. This aims to investigate “How might we empower mental health research participants to build a positive connection with research through socially engaged creative practice?” The strategy built a positive connection both between the research investigation as well as providing a platform for participants to focus on creativity in lockdown and a sense of connectedness “Art enables people to share their experiences, thoughts, feelings and imaginations…Art is intrinsically valuable because it helps us to understand other people’s experiences, developing our sense of compassion and humanity” (Vichealth 2020). The strategy of combining creative output with a research response study is unique. Alongside the strategy I developed the name “COvid.Create” and created the logo and communication material. Significance This artwork was distributed to 2,313 external participants via electronic mail on 11 August 2020 and used within the online questionnaire, also distributed via email to over 2,000 participants on 1 September 2020 and again on 22 October 2020. 44 participants shared the artwork their children created as part of the project which will be curated into a public exhibition. https://www.vichealth.vic.gov.au/media-and-resources/publications/making-art-with-communities-a-work-guide, accessed 20 October 2020.
