The resulting artwork dissolves the boundaries between computational and physical phenomena, dispalying an aesthetic that is a real hybrid of the physical and the digital, of human and machine learning, of natural and artificial intelligence, and of real and synthetic evolution. It is an artwork and aesthetic that emerges from the interaction between robot, people and virtual environment, neither one taking precedence, rather collaborating on a genuinely post-digital, post-convergent artwork.
The robot forms 'impressions' about the artwork based on its 'experience' of the images, sounds, colour, texture and movement of the artwork. The robot also 'learns', via deep neural networks, the opinions of human visitors to the immersive virtual environment. Humans visiting the space communicate with the robot by speaking or writing their impressions. The robot incorporates these impressions into its learning and communicates its responses to the artwork.
The virtual environment responds to the robot's opinions using artificial evolutionary algorithms that control a custom system of granular synthesis that is applied to the generation of the sound, geometry, colour and animation of the environment.
Convolution is a unique artistic experiment in evolving artificial intelligence that privileges parameters emerging from within the system itself, rather than conventional artificial intelligence or evolution parameters that attempt to mimic the physicial world. The result is a highly unusual, audiovisually captivating site-specific work that changes over time and rewards interaction, contemplation and repeat visits.
