Research statement

Background Our work sits within Data Physicalisation’s rich history [1,2] of novel design methodology opening interdisciplinary opportunities to explore how data are experienced, manipulated, and interpreted; these works play a pivotal role in transforming how we perceive, engage with, and derive meaning from complex datasets, bridging diverse disciplines and impacting knowledge of the digital age’s interface with our physical environment. The field amplifies Anthropocentric aesthetics via multisensory dialogues to interrogate the ontological fissures between the digital and material. 1. https://t.ly/rb0Qz 2. https://t.ly/jtBfu Contribution Our aesthetic transcended conventional algorithms that spatialise data via heatmaps or geolocation, reimagining Wi-Fi’s photonic register as a tactile manifestation of the university’s surveillant, knowledge, and community based design. By harnessing 365 days of novel data scraped from the entire university’s Wi-Fi usage, we crafted a new epistemic artefact of Deakin’s datalogical existence. This intricate process, which transfigured surveilled photons into material form, demanded advanced programming, visualisation, and meticulous assembly, literally knitting digital and physical realms together with only, silk, laser-light, and handwork. Significance Our piece was selected for a curated exhibition in Melbourne Design Week, a(n inter)nationally recognised event in the global design landscape, where Australia’s most innovative minds converge with international visionaries to explore and redefine the intersections of design, technology, and social impact. Our gallery work stood aside internationally renowned artists including carvings from Tyson Yunkaporta, AI-generative immersion from Spencer Rose, and new pieces from Anne Scott Wilson, among others from across Australia. Our piece’s methodology and impact was recognised via acceptance to the published proceedings at UbiComp / ISWC 2024 (A1 Qualis, A ERA).
