Dyanero was selected as one of ten finalists in the Reshape 19: Smart Product category (https://youreshape.io/dynaero/), and exhibited at Fira de Barcelona - Gran Via within the IN(3D)USTRY: From Needs to Solutions event during October 2019. 8,900 people attended the exhibition over 3 days (https://media.firabcn.es/content/S126019/docs/INDUSTRY2019_resum_version_digital_05.pdf). Dynaero was also chosen to be part of a year-long travelling exhibition curated by Reshape for wearable technology, and has exhibitions planned in Barcelona and Rome during 2019-2020. It has been featured in numerous media articles including Bicycles Network Australia (https://www.bicycles.net.au/2019/10/smart-aerodynamic-helmet-concept-dynaero-for-perfomance-cycling/), The National Tribune (https://www.nationaltribune.com.au/smart-helmet-designed-by-deakin-researcher-gives-cyclists-edge/) and AuManufacturing (https://www.aumanufacturing.com.au/smart-bike-helmet-reaches-final-of-international-wearable-tech-competition). Designer Dr James Novak attended the event and presented his research on one of the main stages, as well as meeting industry leaders and academics who judged the competition and provided feedback throughout a series of dedicated networking events for the competition.
Research statement
Dynaero [DYNamic AEROdynamics] is a 3D printed, smart bicycle helmet designed to perfectly fit each individual cyclist. It connects to many devices already used by cyclists to track speed, power and other data, using this to automate the opening of ventilation in real-time to suit race conditions. For example, during fast down-hill descents or finish line sprints, the helmet will close ventilation, improving total aerodynamic performance of the cyclist by 3.7% at 44km/h as tested in a wind tunnel. In slower riding conditions or hot temperatures, the vents open to various degrees, cooling the athlete and balancing aerodynamics and ventilation.
