Background
Caroline Lodge required a new design strategy that reflected the growth of the support services and programs offered to women and children that experienced domestic violence. “Emerge – Women and Children’s Support Network” was developed through a rigorous design process.
Contribution
The aim was to communicate Caroline Lodge as a network of support services that contributes to ‘empowering women to change’ to help ‘breaking the cycle’ of domestic violence.
Facilitation of focus group sessions developed an understanding of the effect domestic violence has on the victim and the community that surrounds them, including the care-givers. The design strategy reflects inclusivity, acceptance and hope for victims of domestic violence, particularly women and children.
The project was a collaboration between victims, support providers, welfare providers, law enforcers and medical support providers as well as a design team of five. My contribution included design strategy development, creative direction and design implementation.
The resulting artefacts contribute to answering the question, ‘how does the process of design encourage inclusivity and communicate true empowerment of victims (women and children) of domestic violence?’
Significance
The design was implemented and distributed both in print and online (website, brochures and Annual Report). The impact of the project continues today.
Its value is attested by the following:
• Rebranding contributed to Emerge presenting themselves as a professional organisation obtaining QICSA (Quality Improvement & Community Services Accreditation) in 20092.
• 2018 update and redesign of the website, using brand elements developed through this project, evidence the project’s continuing and ongoing impact.
