Background
As ongoing collaboration between Sean Loughrey & Raafat Ishak, Fan Flag #10 was exhibited as part of the curated exhibition titled, "Text - Re Read", curated by Stephen Wickham and Leanne Willis and presented at the Deakin University Gallery in 2023. The focus of the exhibition was to acknowledge the importance of text (books, etc) in "artmaking and its reception" and the "complex relationships between artists, artworks and the ideas embodied in books and many other material sources." The field of practice engaged in this proposition was restricted to artists who work with Abstraction.
Contribution
As a continuing collaborative project this artwork aimed to push the "material" boundaries of what abstraction can be. The use of video highlighted ideas about abstraction and non-objective art as mediated. This project continues an examination into the question of how these separate mediums and forms initiate new ways of thinking about abstraction and forms of non-representational art practice. While this project continues the dialogue between photographic representation (this time video), painting and the sculptural forms, it also highlighted the importance of source material and the conversations around how an art practice is informed by history/ies.
Significance
The exhibition was claimed to be a celebration of thoughtful engagement with ideas. "Text – Re read acknowledges the importance of words, texts, articles and books, from illuminated manuscripts to la poésie concrete, words and the ideas therein that remain central to art-making and its reception."
The exhibition was said to "highlight a slow consideration of the complex relationships between artists, artworks and the ideas embodied in books and many other material sources.
Along with the exhibition was a Catalogue and an online interview between artists and curators regarding selected text.
