Research statement

Hold (Redux) is a part of a photographic series that captures key moments in the performance/installation artwork Hold first performed in 2007. Selected for inclusion in the 1st Zhanjiang Huizhi Art Festival in Shanghai, this photograph seeks to examine how an unguarded moment of inter-personal exchange between performer and audience member can offer new understandings of intimacy within a contemporary art context. The photograph captures the moment the audience member enters the inflatable installation to discover an unknown arm penetrating the wall. The audience member is forced into a complex decision as to whether to take the arm and seek to navigate the inflatable structure or to attempt the journey along a ledge above the ground on their own. The photograph of this dimension of the work extends the ideas in the original installation asking a different set of questions around how documentation of live performative events can add to or even create new. resonances that speak to the human condition and our propensity for risk. Hold (Redux) was selected by Shanghai curator Joyce Huang for inclusion in this international exhibition featuring Chinese, New Zealand and Australian artists.
