engResearch statement
Background The new Deakin MotionLab proposed a more collaborative way of working with various creative researchers to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration. I proposed a concept to incorporate co-design methodology with logo design. Co-design is traditionally used as a methodology in the process of designing brands but this approach to having individual members of the DML to have their own personalised logo is new. Flexible logo design ensures that logos have the capacity to adapt for various circumstances. Contribution I developed the concept and strategy for personalised logo designs and provided the framework for researchers to either develop their own logo or supply an image that represents their research for me to generate their individualised logo. This research aims to answer the question “How might we create a sense of ownership, inclusiveness and individual creativity through a personalised logo design by combining co-design and flexible branding methodologies” Using human centred, co-design methodology, investigation was undertaken to reveal that people have a stronger connection to a brand that they have contributed to developing themselves. I re-designed the original DML logo to reflect a more contemporary style while the icon in the logo provided a space for researchers to personalise their own, unique brand that reflected themselves and their research. I was responsible for combining the images and ideas provided by each researcher and create their unique logo. Significance 17 of the initial 24 DML members submitted artwork to make their own personalised logo to be used in both internal and external email signatures as well as on external communications slide decks. The logos have been used on the DML website and printed signage as a collection of individual expression. The success of the research and outputs of Individuals’ affiliation to their own personal logos is indicated in their ongoing use.Publication classification
